Namebench Result: TMNET faster

Google just release open-source application that help us to select best DNS server. I put some test, and here the result;

Introducing namebench (via feedly)

Slow DNS servers can make for a terrible web browsing experience, but knowing which one to use isn't easy. namebench is a new open source tool that helps to take the guess-work out of the DNS server selection process. namebench benchmarks available DNS services and provides a personalized comparison to show you which name servers perform the best. As a System Administrator at Google, I was curious about measuring how BGP route selection affected the performance of Google Public DNS. This curiosity resulted in writing a small benchmarking script, which was further developed during my 20% time to become a full-featured application for Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X.

namebench is covered by the Apache 2.0 license, and was made possible by using several other great open-source tools including Python, Tkinter, PyObjC, dnspython, jinja2 and graphy. It also makes use of the Google Chart API to visualize the results:

In order to provide the most relevant results, namebench employs a number of interesting techniques. First, it personalizes the benchmark by making use of your browser history to see what hosts to benchmark with. It also determines cache-sharing relationships between different IP's and removes the slowest of these servers to avoid improperly benchmarking them solely on cached results. namebench will also report on DNS misbehavior such as DNS hijacking and censorship.

namebench 1.0 is available for download now. If you would like to discuss or have any questions namebench, please join the namebench mailing list. Happy hacking!

One button to merge all duplicate contacts

Managing a big address book can be a challenge, so it's no surprise that the top request for Google contacts is a fast, easy way to merge duplicate contacts. You've been able to merge contacts one-by-one for a while, but now we've added a single button that merges all your duplicate contacts at once. To clean up your contact list in one fell swoop, just click the "Find duplicates" button in the contact manager, review the merge suggestions (and uncheck any suggestions you don't want merged), and hit the "Merge" button.

If you've been considering getting all your contacts into Gmail or syncing your Gmail contacts to your phone, now's the time to do it. As we've written about previously, you can sync your contacts to a wide variety of devices (including Android, iPhone, Blackberry, SyncML, etc). So if you were dreading spending hours getting your contacts in order, now you can do it with a couple clicks.

Step 1: Make a Boxee Box (no need to cut a hole)

via Boxee Blog by andrew on 12/9/09

First and foremost thanks to everyone who came out to the Music Hall of Williamsburg Monday night – it was a great event and was fun to see so many users, partners, and press in person. We posted the details of the Beta Monday night, and if you haven't done so yet, register on our pre-release list to get an invite to the Beta over the coming weeks.

So there's been a lot of talk about the Boxee Box over the past 36 hours and we wanted to give you the "official" version.

The Boxee Box Front

It was designed by Astro Studios, the team who crafted designs for the Xbox 360, watches from Nike, Alienware PCs. It's being built by D-Link, the leading networking company for homes & small businesses. Working with D-Link means that we'll be able to design, build, and release a Boxee Box at a low cost to a ton of etail and retail outlets.

As the title indicates, this is step 1.  Soon, every device in your living room will connect to the Internet, and we hope Boxee will be the software that runs on them.  For now though, the Boxee Box is the easiest way to get Boxee onto that huge HDTV in your living room.  Here's how you can make that connection happen…

Boxee Back

  • HDMI – one inexpensive HDMI cable to connect The Boxee Box to your TV
  • SPDIF – hi-definition digital audio that will pass through Dolby 5.1 Surround Sound and DTS to your A/V Receiver
  • Stereo Audio (RCA) – red & white cables from the 80's, 90's and today
  • 2 x USB ports – add devices like external hard drives and more
  • Wireless 802.11n & Wired Ethernet – Cords if you got 'em, wireless if you don't
  • RF Remote Control – control playback from anywhere

And although the above pictures look really classy, they don't give you an idea of the size of the box.  Here's a preliminary image to give you an idea of scale.

Boxee Badunkadunk + Coke Can

Rest assured the Boxee Box will fit into your entertainment center.  If the look doesn't quite fit with your decor, not to worry.  The RF remote means you can place the box out of sight and still control it.   Of course, the Boxee Box prefers being on top : )

We'll reveal more about the Boxee Box by D-Link at the Consumer Electronics Show in January, but if you'd like to see a little more, check out the new page for the Box on  our completely re-designed website.

The Boxee Beta

We are very excited to unveil the Boxee Beta. It is a big step in the evolution of Boxee, but rather than bore you with sentimental prose about how the path we took to get here, I wanted to dive right into what's new with the Beta release.

Home Screen:

BoxeeHomeScreen

We've completely re-designed the home screen to make it easier to navigate to your favorite content. We've pulled the menu out from the side and put it front and center. Below is your hub for recommendations and content; See recommendations from friends on boxee, Facebook or Twitter (Feed), recommendations from Boxee's staff and partners (Featured) and the latest episodes from your favorite shows or things you've saved for later (Queue).

Global Menu:

BoxeeGlobalMenu

This is one of our favorite additions to the Beta – the global menu. This menu makes it easy to access helpful resources (TOP – Logout, Settings, Queue, Feed, History), the main menu (MIDDLE – Photos, Music, Movies, Home, TV Shows, Apps, Files) and shortcuts (BOTTOM) to your favorite Apps, TV Shows, Movies, or folders.

TV Shows & Movies:

BoxeeTVLibrary

BoxeeMovieLibraryGenre

BoxeeMovieSearch

We overhauled Movies and TV shows to include both Internet and local content; If you know what it is you want to watch, we'll show you where you can find it and start playing it immediately – no need to go through an App. Not sure what you're in the mood for, we've made it easy to browse a ton of popular movies from the Internet by selecting the Movie library.

We've put a special focus on TV Shows to better organize what you can watch. Boxee now organizes TV shows by season and episode, and let's you filter by whether freely available or not, so once you've seen all the free episodes you can decide if that DVD is worth it.

Nokia’s 2010 Goals: Fix the Symbian UI, release Maemo 6, and make more money

Nokias 2010 Goals: Fix the Symbian UI, release Maemo 6, and make more money

nokiacmdcrop Nokias 2010 Goals: Fix the Symbian UI, release Maemo 6, and make more money

Today Nokia (NYSE: NOK) is holding their Capital Markets Day event in Espoo, Finland. It's similar to the Nokia World event that took place in September, but instead of an having an audience of press and people working in the industry, this is an event for shareholders and analysts. Everyone is looking at Nokia, and then looking at Google (NSDQ: GOOG), Apple (NSDQ: AAPL), and RIM, and then they look at Nokia again and ask: "are you fucking serious, you call that a portfolio of innovative devices and services?"

Today's event offers a sneak peak at what Nokia is planning for 2010, and how they're going to fix their problems. Here are some of the highlights, cut copy and pasted from the press release:

  • Nokia expects industry mobile device volumes to be up approximately 10% in 2010, compared to 2009.
  • Nokia targets its mobile device volume market share to be flat in 2010, compared to 2009.
  • Nokia targets to increase its mobile device value market share slightly in 2010, compared to 2009.
  • Nokia continues to target Services net sales of EUR 2 billion or more in 2011.
  • Nokia continues to target to have 300 million active users for its services by the end of 2011.
  • Re-engineer our Symbian user interface; deliver a major product milestone before mid-year 2010, and another major product milestone before the end of 2010.
  • Deliver our first Maemo 6-powered mobile computer, with an iconic user experience, in the second half of 2010.
  • Significantly increase the proportion of touch and/or QWERTY devices in our smartphone portfolio.
  • Provide third party developers with better tools to create applications and content for our Ovi ecosystem.

The nearly double digit drop of unit sales the industry experienced in 2009 will bounce right back to 2008 levels in 2010. That's a good thing. Symbian's UI getting an overhaul? About time, but we'll have to wait and see how the 2010 Symbian experience will compare to the 2010 iPhone and Android experience. The troubling bit of today's news is Nokia saying they'll deliver a Maemo 6 device in the second half of 2010. That's marketing talk for the very, very, very last week of the year, and even then the volumes are not going to ramp up until Q1 2011. I hope I'm wrong about that of course, but with the trouble Nokia has been experiencing lately with getting the E72, N97 Mini and N900 out the door, you have to take their ship dates with a mountain of salt.

Keep coming back to this post, I'm sure there will be additional information released.

Update: The 51.2 MB PDF file with all the slides from the presentation today has been uploaded. I'll highlight a few below.

Update: Quote of the presentation came from Nokia CEO OPK: "We will make fewer, but better, devices in 2010." He also said, again, Symbian will be the dominant smartphone platform Nokia will use "for the foreseeable future". Regarding Symbian's UI, "by this time next year, the Symbian UI will not be an issue". In the Q&A session he admitted that Nokia has had problems with executing.

Update: Quote from Kai Öistämö: There will be dual SIM S40 devices in 2010, there will also be QWERTY devices with S40 in 2010. The 6700 Classic has close to a 40% margin. The new Symbian UI will require fewer taps, clicks and steps to get things done.

Update: Quote from Anssi Vanjoki: "In 2008 we had a consumer retention rate of 49%, in Q3 2009 that number rose to 57%, our goal for 2011 is 65%."

Update: Quote from Niklas Savander: "With the new Symbian UI we are deleting over 350 user prompts."
